Why DukeEngage Durham? As I am from the Columbia, South Carolina area, I have seen the impact that a post-industrial economy can have on all aspects of life, from education to career mobility to unity within the community. I wanted to play a small part in aiding the area that surrounds our campus and learn from the cross-cultural approach to service between North Carolina and the United Kingdom.

Why DukeEngage Durham?  I chose DukeEngage Durham because I liked the transcontinental aspect of this particular program. I think that living and working in Durham, NC for the summer will give me a better appreciation of the city and community as a whole throughout the rest of my time at Duke. I also wanted the opportunity to fully immerse myself in English culture, which I have been fascinated with since I was younger.

Why DukeEngage Durham? I was drawn to DukeEngage Durham because as much as Duke has felt like home to me, Durham seemed rather distant, due to my lack of interaction with members of the surrounding community. Moreover, as the economies of both Durham’s are evolving, I look forward to adapting to the differing cultural and historical elements of the two cities.
